The Guyana Police Force has fallen short of its target in its latest recruitment drive. To date, 169 applicants have responded – 90 male and 79 female.
Deputy Force Training Officer of the Felix Austin Police College, Superintendent Paul Williams, said that a minimum of 200 recruits are accepted for a given training course.
Superintendent Williams noted that the recruitment drive was designed to reach outlying areas such as Mazaruni, Lethem and Kwakwani.
However there is still the walk-in process that would capture more applicants from Georgetown, Linden and Berbice, according to Williams.
He said that continuous criticisms directed at the Guyana Police Force by members of the media or members of the public who have experienced unprofessional acts from some members of the Force, have not caused hindrances to the recruitment drive.
Williams further stated that over the last three years, the College has not seen the decline of applicants for recruitment and that the training institution has the capacity to accommodate 450 recruits as courses are held yearly.
The Felix Austin Training School was named after a former Commissioner of Police, Felix Austin. The institution is located at the Eve Leary compound.
There are three training centres where recruits are trained. The other two are located at Suddie on the Essequibo Coast and at Corentyne, Berbice.
The highest standards of courtesy, discipline and professionalism are taught.
Some areas covered at the institute are Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Traffic Management, Community Policing, Criminal Law, First Aid, Arms Drill, Office Security and Domestic Violence.
The recruits are required to be physically fit and mentally sound Guyanese between the age of 18 and 30 years, with a sound educational background. Applicants must successfully complete an entrance examination, in addition to medical and background checks.
