Seven men and a woman were yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Alan Wilson after being charged possession of a controlled substance for the purpose to trafficking.
Aubrey Kingston, Nauro Oliveira, Kerno Argyle, Winston Gulliver, Deopaul Muakelall, Deonarine Singh, Paul Toney and Cilerial Wicham yesterday appeared at the Bartica Magistrates Court, charged with two counts each of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on Monday last they had in their possession a quantity of cocaine and cannabis.
Acting on information received the eight persons were searched while waiting to board a boat at First Avenue, Bartica.
The boat was about to leave for Aranka when the illicit substances were found. They were told of the offence, arrested and hence the charges. Only Singh was represented, by defense counsel Peter Hugh.
However bail was objected to by Police Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Edmond Cooper. Cooper asked that bail be denied on the grounds that the offence is not a bailable one, only if special reasons are given, and there was no special reason in this matter.
Bail was refused and the accused were remanded. They are scheduled to make their next court appearance on September 8.
