As many youths cry out for employment, many who become employed fail to keep their job because they lack necessary work ethics. In this regard, Youth Challenge Guyana (YCG) will be launching a “Youth Employability and Development Programme (YEDP)”, which targets employed youths by teaching them skills necessary to remain employed.
YEDP is part of the “Enhanced Public Trust, Security and Inclusion (EPTSI) Project” funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) which targets young men and women, between the ages of 18 and 30, who are employed at businesses or are from marginalised communities.
The six-week programme which runs from September 6 to October 13 will empower the young people by making them more competitive, thus enhancing their job skills and ensuring improved personal and community development.
“In the past, we targeted unemployed youths and helped them to be placed as interns in business places. But this time we are targeting the employed [youths] to help them keep their jobs by teaching them skills to deal with the public,” stated Coordinator of YEDP, Abena Hinds, in an interview with Kaieteur News yesterday.
She further added that the programme seeks to target at least seventy youths, training them mainly in various skills such as communication, decision-making, gender sensitisation, leadership, financial management, peace-building and conflict resolution.
“Conflict resolution is something that this age group (18-30) is affected by, so we will help them overcome this in their job and community.”
When speaking on what she expects the participants to do with the knowledge gained she said, “We expect that after completing the programme, the participants will go into their communities and teach their peers what they have learnt…they [the participants] will be positive role models.”
Businesses are encouraged to enroll their employees. According to Hinds, “Businesses play a positive role in communities; not only would they benefit economically, but also improve the community…they can have an integral role in community development.”
The programme will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-12pm and 1-3pm. Free lunch will be provided. Registration costs $100 and forms are available at the YCG office, 291 Thomas Street, South Cummingsburg. The deadline for registration is Friday, August 27. For more information, interested persons can call 223-7884, 227-5779 or 225-0129.
