The Guyana Association of Legal Practitioners (GALP), formerly the Berbice Bar Association, on Wednesday last held its election of office bearers at the Berbice High Court.
The meeting began in mid-afternoon and the executive members were unanimously elected to serve for the next two years.
Former Member of Parliament, Ramesh Rajkumar, was installed as the new President and he will have several prominent legal figures to assist him with the running of the association. Former Director of Public Prosecutions, Denis Hanomansingh, was elected as Vice President with Norma Lewis, one of two female lawyers in the association, taking up the mantle of Secretary.
The Treasurer is former Magistrate Rohan Chandan. Charrandass Persaud is the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.
Three Committee members were elected: Joe Misir, Perry Gossai and former judge Kumar Dorasami.
The GALP, along with a constitution which was registered in 2004, replaced the now defunct Berbice Bar Association.
According to association’s new President, the GALP was revived with the view of improving the functioning of the legal profession in Berbice in every possible way. The prominent attorney said that the association plans to get cracking immediately, since there are some burning issues to be ironed out.
These include the functioning of the Land Registry in Berbice and Guyana in general, which he said is a sore point. He revealed that the body would be requesting of the Guyana Revenue Authority that an Estate Duty Officer be stationed in Berbice.
The employment of a Librarian or staff for the non-functioning Law Library which is situated in the Berbice High Court is another issue high on the agenda.
There is a need for the general improvement, attitude and functioning of the entire Registry, and there are also plans to produce Identification Cards for members of the association.
Rajkumar thanked the members for their unanimous support and the confidence that they showed in electing him in an effort to move the association forward.
He also committed himself to working closely with the head of the judiciary and those bodies in authority to make sure that the judicial system remains the hallmark of society.
The president pledged his and the association’s commitment to working closely with the Guyana Bar Association and other like organizations.
Attorney at Law and member of the Guyana Bar Association, Gregory Gaskin, performed the duties of Returning Officer. The association has 14 financial members.
The next meeting is set for Wednesday, September 15, at the Berbice High Court.
