It’s true that some places use phony surveillance cameras to scare away would-be thieves but what are the odds that the security cameras in an establishment like the Gizmos and Gadgets Superstore might be real?
Apparently they weren’t high enough to dissuade one security guard to keep his hands off the tempting goods.
The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system in the electronics store caught running footage of a security guard stealing four digital cameras right out of the display case in the store.
The incident took place shortly after 18:00 hrs on Saturday last as the staff were locking up for the weekend.
According to Mr. Ewart Sampson, Human Resources Manager, the store was already closed and most of the staff had left with the exception of the security guard and the Operations Manager, Brian Paul, who is usually the last one out the door.
The guard took the opportunity to open the case and proceeded to remove the cameras – worth almost $250,000 – while Paul was occupied elsewhere in the store.
According to Sampson, yesterday morning Paul noted during the course of business that the camera display case seemed a little ‘bare’.
He pointed same out to the Sales Manager, Sophia Hussain, and together they reviewed the security footage where the theft was eventually discovered. They immediately contacted the police who responded promptly, according to Sampson.
The guard involved reported for work as usual yesterday morning and was unaware that his crime had been discovered until the police arrested him on site yesterday afternoon and took him to the station.
According to Mr. Sampson, just a few weeks ago, another guard was transferred after he was caught stealing someone’s lunch at the store.
Meanwhile, the manager of the security service noted that the guard will be left to face the full consequences for his actions, and regardless of the outcome of the matter, his employment will be terminated.
