Coach Dover confident his side can upset the hosts
History will be made today in London when a Guyana football team plays a full fledge football game against an English side.
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in partnership with Temptation Promotion and GT Promotion have teamed up to bring off this historic game which is set for the Dulwich Hamlet Football Club Champion Hill Stadium.
The GFF All Stars led by USA based John Rodrigues will take on Cray Wanderers in what is expected to be a keen contest. A number of English based players will team up with their USA, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana based counterparts seeking to upstage the host team which has already predicted that they will win today’s encounter.
The GFF All Stars held their final practice session yesterday and were a confident bunch at the end. Head Coach Wayne Dover and his Assistant Peter Barry were again in charge of the session and have both expressed assurance that their charges can take care of business today.
Director of Temptation Promotions Faizal Khan whose brain child it was to have such a game stated that this game in London is a dream come true for Guyanese players and the Guyanese Community in England, USA, the Caribbean and home.
“I am very happy that we have reached this point, it’s been four and a half years of hard work and turning dreams into reality. As a child I dreamt of being able to watch the Guyana team play in England, to see Guyanese players featured in major computer games. Today, those two dreams are now realities but I still have two more dreams to accomplish. One, to have the first Guyanese player play in the English Premier and two, for Guyana to qualify for the World Cup finals. I will not rest well until these two dreams are accomplished.”
Captain Rodrigues said in an invited comment said he was excited to be a part of this historical game and he is even more excited to see the number of new emerging talented players in England and Guyana.
“I think this is an eye opener for the fans to see that Guyana has what it takes to compete with the rest of the world. I am backing my colleagues to do their best and put on a good show against Cray Wanderers. What else can I say; the future sure looks bright for Guyana’s football.”
The 18-man squad announced after yesterday’s final practice session: Goalkeepers – Rosnon Williams and Jason Lloyd. John Rodrigues (Captain), Harry Wilson, Jake Newton, Chris Bourne, Sean Cameron, Glenorvan Edmonds, Shawn Beveney, Alani Mounter, Fabian Brown, Eon Alleyne, Chris Nurse, Ricky Shakes, Mustapha Haqq, Clive Andries, Kabir Khan and Shawn Sanmogan.
