Alpha & Victoria Kings advance
By Franklin Wilson
The battle for the final two semifinal places in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League/Super 8 knock-out completion is set for this evening at the GFC Ground and promises some mouth watering action.
Sunburst Camptown will take on the youthful Buxton United in the evening’s opening match-up which will be followed by the main event between Upper Demerara’s Milerock and the Guyana Defence Force. The 8 participating teams will be using this tournament as preparation for the second round of the Super League which will start later this month.
The GDF will be seeking to be very offensive minded against their Linden rivals and have a few potent forwards in their lineup who can create problems for the Milerock defence. Telson McKinnon, Clement Brown, Peters Parks, Delroy Deen will all be in contention for the starting side. Captain Warren Gilkes, Shavane Seaforth, Rodwell Sandy, Delon Younge, Desford Williams, Marlon Benjamin, Trevon Lythcott, Royan Morrison and Ryan Adolph will all add depth to the GDF’s quest for a win and semifinal place but Milerock will be no pushovers.
The Bauxite Town team will be seeking to advance given the fact that their fellow Linden side Bakewell Topp XX were booted by Alpha United on Saturday evening.
Marlon Maxius, Derrol Dainty, Trevor Tudor, Gerald Whittington, Steve Brewley, Jermaine Mc Bean, Jessie Waldron and Oswald Benjamin will carry the attack for Milerock.
Sunburst Camptown’s challenge will be spearheaded by Captain Orlando Gilgeous, Nigel Codrington, Richie Richards, Leon Muir, Lance Rolston, Delon Johnson, Sherwin Cadogan, Adrian Adonis, Kwame La Fleur, Keiville Frank and the veteran Troy Prescod.
Carrying the victory hopes of the young Buxton United side will be Clive Andries, Travis Phyll, Les-Charles Critchlow, Gavin Andries, Travan Gentle, Jamal Randi Phyll, Tyron Adams, Clyde Lewis and Colwin Barnwell. Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
Meanwhile, the first set of games resulted in wins for Alpha United and Victoria Kings who have both advanced to the semifinals; Alpha got past Bakewell Topp XX 2-0 while Victoria Kings won a close tussle against Rosignol United 2-1.
Alpha will face the winner of the Sunburst Camptown/Buxton United game while Victoria Kings will square off with winner of the GDF/Milerock match-up.
Alpha was pushed to the brink against a young Topp XX side which will be a force to reckon with in the not too distant future.
Dwain Jacobs with a well executed volley on a cross from Okeney Fraser sent Alpha into the lead 5 minutes into the game. Topp XX coached by Collie Hercules, showed great ball control and made a number of promising runs down the flanks and middle but their best efforts were thwarted by National Captain Howard Lowe and his band of defenders which included Kelvin McKenzie.
Alpha’s experience made the difference in the end but it was not without a tough fight. Leon Grumble in the 58th minute doubled the lead for Alpha, diving into a low squared ball from Jacobs to touch it in past the onrushing defence and goalkeeper.
The first game of the tournament was a closely fought encounter with Victoria Kings prevailing over the West Berbice based Rosignol United.
Kings squeezed to the win with a 90th minute strike from Kurt Warren with the game tied at 1-1. Winston Pompey had given the East Coast Demerara side the initial lead in the 29th minute. It took a while for Rosignol to find the equaliser but they eventually did compliments of Delroy Fraser in the 69th minute.

Football coaches successfully complete Elite Training Course
– urged to impart newly acquired knowledge
Twenty-one top level coaches from affiliate Associations and Senior League Clubs around the country successfully completed an Elite Coaches Training Course at Olympic House, High Street Kingston, which commenced on July 26 and concluded yesterday morning with the presentation of certificates.
The course was a part of the ‘Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF’ programme and was organized by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) under the auspices of FIFA.
The participants were exposed to theoretical and practical sessions on the intricacies of the sport including sports medicine, prevention of injury, nutritional requirements for athletes and doping control procedures among other topics. The participants were also exposed to two days in the fields where they were drilled on practical issues including game analysis among others. FIFA coach/Instructor, Costa Rican Rodrigo Kenton facilitated the sessions.
Subsequently, at the end of the course, the FIFA representative lauded the participants for the enthusiasm displayed during the learning process. He urged the group to go into the various communities and share their newly acquired knowledge so that others may benefit from the experience.
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr. Frank Anthony delivered brief remarks to the participants at the closing ceremony and while congratulating them, urged that they make full use of what they had learnt. Consequently, Dr. Anthony pledged his government’s support to football development even as he pointed out that his Ministry was primarily interested in sports education.
General Secretary of the GFF, Noel Adonis, then expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Kenton while assuring him that his efforts to improve local football were not in vain.
He reminded the participants that they were now categorized as elite material by dint of their exposure to the programme. “Let this fact reflect in your conduct as of now,” the General Secretary urged.
Each participant then received a certificate of participation.
Is this oil a blessing or a curse?
