Over sixty children are attending a one-month Vacation Sports and Academic Camp at Banks DIH Sports Complex at Thirst Park geared at offering life skills to the participants.
The programme which started on July19 will run until August 19 with three sessions per week organized by Banks DIH Sports Club Committee.
Coordinator of the Programme Jimmy Ramnarayan, Sports Manager of Banks DIH Ltd. disclosed that the participants aged six to 16 years, all company employees children are exposed to training in sports, drama and academics.
“The children take part in chess and other board games, physical activities such as table tennis, football which are all currently being played indoors because of the inclement weather, once the weather improves we will utilize the ground for athletics and circle tennis,” he added.
Three coaches Candacy McKenzie, Dennis “Chow” Hunte and Xenophon Goliah are coordinating the various activities.
“The topics include promoting good manners, remedial classes for slow learners and debating competitions.
These were chosen to develop discipline and promote moral values to the children attending,” Ramnarayan said.
The programme will end with a Cultural presentation where the children will show case their talent.

Cavalier Sports and Tour Club launches race walk month with a 10km event
The Cavalier Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) kicks off activities to commemorate its 6th race walk month with a 10 kilometre walk around the Soesdyke junction on Sunday August 1.
Activities continue one day later with a walk from the Burnham Bust, Vlissengen Road Kitty up to the Place of the Seven Ponds.
Thereafter, race walkers will be in action once again on Tuesday 3rd but this time they would be conducting lecture sessions on the intricacies of the sport.
Activities would continue throughout August with several competitive events. Most of the country’s top race walkers have already commenced training with an aim of excelling at the month long activities.
Reports out of Linden also suggest that national race walk champion; Rudolph Mitchell has intensified activities in preparation for the month long events. He is taking advantage of the undulating terrain in his hometown, Linden to hone his skill in preparation for anything his adversaries may come up with.
The August 1 event would also include veterans, children and participants in the differently able category. Competitors are urged to be at the Burnham Bust, Vlissengen Road Kitty by 06:00hrs to facilitate a prompt start at 06:30hrs.

Guyana Legion Domino team triumph as another championship looms
The Guyana Legion Domino team won 74 games, a similar amount as the Royal Casino Domino team to share the honours when the ACDA Emancipation Dominos tournament concluded over the past weekend at the Guyana Legion’s Hall, Carifesta Avenue.
Guyoil Sports Club won 66 games to seal off the third place.
Vernon McPherson top scored for the Legion with 14 games while Richard Wilkinson scored 17 games for Royal Casino to capture the prize for the most games. Trevor Odean won 15 games, the most by any Guyoil player. The tournament was organized by Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell.
Meanwhile, in other related domino news, the Guyana National Dominoes Federation (GNDF) in association with Suppligen is promoting a countrywide domino tournament starting from Monday August 2.
Towards this end, all affiliates are invited to a briefing scheduled for Friday July 30 at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground, Lance Gibbs Street, Queenstown, starting at 17:30hrs. President of the GNDF, Robert Williams revealed that over one million dollars in cash and prizes would be at stake.
Members are asked to make a special effort to be at the meeting.
