Achieves PB in the process
In her first outing at the senior level Guyana’s Jessica Stephenson while finishing 14th in the women’s 200m breaststroke at the XX1 Central American & Caribbean Games taking place in Puerto Rico swam to a Personal Best (PB) in the event.
The opening ceremony of the event was postponed from Saturday to yesterday due to inclement weather.
Stephenson is Guyana’s lone swimmer at these games and going into the event with a 2:46.33, she achieved a new Personal Best of 2:45.67 which saw her placing 14th in a highly competitive field of 21.
Stephenson swam in the final of the 3 preliminary heats, which also saw 21 year-old Alia Atkinson of Jamaica who is currently the American NCAA champion and two-time CAC medallist winning the event in a new CAC record time of 2:33.60.
Stephenson was by far the fastest of the 15 and under age group swimmers and has learnt a lot from her first outing in a Senior Meet. She said she is looking forward to her next breast event which will be tomorrow.
Her participation at this prestigious Meet was made possible through by the Guyana Olympic Association, Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company, Scotiabank and Ansa McAl.
Guyana’s Chef de Mission at the Games Deion Nurse cheered Stephenson on as many of Guyana’s athletes had still not arrived up to that point or was at different locations.
The second part of the female hockey team was due to arrive yesterday, having had to stay in Trinidad due to a cancelled flight. A number of the other teams bound for Puerto Rico were also affected.
