The daughter of Pastor Donna and Henry Browne, of New Life Ministries, 18-year-old Angelina Mari Brown, has copped one of the US’s prestigious awards for excellence in education.
She is the recipient of the US National Society of High School Scholars award for Academic Merit. The award was conferred on her earlier this year.
Browne also received an award from her school, Peoples Baptiste Academy in Georgia, which she attended after she moved to the US some four years ago.
The young woman, who left Guyana whilst she was a second year student at Queen’s College, said that it was extremely difficult for her when she first enrolled in the US with one big challenge being the fact that she was one of the very few blacks attending the school. She said that she often felt alone.
Another challenge she faced was the fact that the school work was on a whole different level as compared to in Guyana. This was coupled with the fact that she had to travel back and forth to Guyana.
This traveling, she explained, had to do with the fact that she is a dancer/singer/songwriter and she would train and perform for her parents’ church.
Speaking award, Browne was elated. She said that she felt honoured to be the recipient of such an award given that she has put in a lot of hard work recognising the importance of education.
Browne said that all young people should recognise the importance of education and strive to excel so that they can elevate themselves to so much more and not have current circumstances be a deterrent.
In a message to all Guyanese youths she said that it (getting an education) is hard work but it pays off in the long run. She urged the administration locally to seek to adopt higher standards of education.
Browne was at the time comparing the level of professionalism and delivery of education between the two countries.
Recalling her experiences while in the US, Browne said that the Barack Obama campaign was a particularly revealing period that she will always remember. She was attending a school and in the company of students who did not particularly support Obama. She said that snide restrained remarks against him were very revealing.
Oddly enough the few blacks that attend the school all stayed home the day he was elected. She said with a big smile that it was in no way planned but just happened.
Browne at present is not completely settled on what her future career will be. She said that she will soon be attending University to achieve her doctorate.
Her parallel career however will also be pursued as she continues to dole out more of her gospel music.
She and her brother recently launched a seven-track album titled Anoint Me Lord.
