Race walkers would be kept very busy for the month of August after the planning committee of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) has unveiled a packed itinerary to commemorate its 6th race walk month of activities from Sunday August 1 until Tuesday August 31.
Already some of the big names in the sport have commenced training and reports coming out of Linden suggest that national race walker, Rudolph Mitchell has commenced a stiff training regiment meant to hold off his competitors and retain his winning streak.
The race walkers out of Georgetown and its environs, cognizant of Mitchell’s prowess have also intensified their training and from all indications are prepared to meet Mitchell head on.
Some of these walkers are utilizing the National Park during the evenings to hone their skills while whipping themselves into appreciable condition. These include Jonathon Fagundes and O’Neil Joseph among others. The veterans’ category will also provide fierce competition when Maurice Fagundes and septuagenarian Rudolph Holder take to the starter’s line.
Both walkers are aged competitors yet they have been able to out-walk younger competitors.
Holder recently undertook a 3 mile event on the West Coast Demerara and completed the journey in under the stipulated target of 30 minutes. Ever since then he has been mouthing off and daring anyone his age to battle against him. He will get his heart’s desire at one or more of the races slated for the month long activities.
Meanwhile, the walkers commence their activities with a 10K race around the Soesdyke community and culminate at the CSTC Headquarters, Back Road Soesdyke EBD. Activities get underway at 06:20hrs with the race walk and continue at 11:00hrs when the athletes partake in a luncheon.
At 18:00hrs participants would be entertained with a cultural extravaganza. Several other races are planned for the month. Kaieteur Sport would keep the nation informed as the activities unfold.
