The President and members of the Berbice Cricket Board have offered words of congratulations to Captain Royston Crandon and his team for winning the DJ Stress Twenty20 Festival at the National Stadium.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry who was also Manager of the team described the win as one of the greatest recent achievements of the Board taking into consideration that the opposing teams was made up of several members of the West Indies team including Captain Chris Gayle and their most prolific batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Beharry believes that that proper preparation, team spirit and good administration can work wonders. While others may not have believed in the team, the team believed in themselves as was evident during the tournament.
Beharry added that the aim of the Board is to make a clean sweep of all the major Inter County and National tournaments and they have taken a number of initiatives towards achieving that goal.
He said that the success of the senior team is a direct result of the elite training programme initiative. He advised that the other Board’s should follow suit for the development of the sport.
Beharry is calling on the business community and individuals to support the board. “Too many of our young people are involved in crime in our society and I call on all stake holders to play their role to eliminate this sad situation.”
The BCB’s fund raising raffle is due to be drawn on July 31, the public is asked to support the venture, tickets are being sold at a cost of $100 and is available at the Board Office and from any member.
The BCB is extending thanks to Administration of the Albion Estate for making the Albion Community Centre readily available for training of the team including their many other projects. The Coaches and other members involved in the preparation of the team also came in for high praise from the Board.
Also recognised for his contribution was Vickram Seubarran, owner of Universal DVD club for his sponsorship and faith shown in Berbice cricket. Beharry said that the cricketers are the pride of Berbice and the board will always strive to offer them the best conditions to train and play.
