Terrence Williams of Arthurville Primary School on Wakenaam Island has topped the Essequibo Islands at the National Grade Six Assessment this year. He received 531 marks and was awarded a place at Bishop’s High School in Georgetown.
Terrence lives at Noitgedacht Village with his mother and other siblings. During his primary school years he always topped his class.
Terrence has not decided on what career he would like to take up but at present he is looking forward to his secondary school life.
Headmaster of the School, Mr. Pooran Ramdass said that the success of Terrence came at a time when he was working to raise the average mean of the National Grade Six Assessment of the School. He is not surprised at the performance of the student since he expected good results from him.
Terrence’s mother told this news paper that his hobbies are reading, football and cricket.
When this newspaper contacted the mother, it was not certain if Terrence would be taking up his offer at Bishop’s High School or would be attending another school.
One of the problems for students who do well at these examinations is that there is no dormitory where the students from rural areas may stay to attend the school they have been awarded.
These students depend on relatives who at times live far out of town and commuting is prohibitive, reinforcing the need for school buses.
This is the second consecutive year that Wakenaam Island has topped the Essequibo Islands and awarded place in the top schools in Georgetown. Last year, Candacia Seymour of Sans Souci Primary topped the Essequibo Islands and was awarded a place at St. Stanislaus College.
Wakenaam residents are calling for the establishment of a dormitory for students of the rural areas who have no place to stay in Georgetown or its environs.
