Regal Masters XI defeated Floodlights XI by 5 wickets to storm into the quarter-finals when play in the 4R Masters’ Cup and Females Softball Cricket Tournament continued at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground Queenstown, Sunday July 4 last.
Floodlights X1 won the toss and elected to take first strike on a heavy outfield. The decision backfired after Anil Hardyal (5 overs, 2 maidens 3 for 27) and Mahendra Arjune (2-14 from 4 overs) used the conditions to restrict Floodlights to 95-9 in their 25 overs.
The only batsmen to offer resistance were Wayne Jones (17) and Tulsie Dass (16).
Regal Masters XI lost a few early wickets before Lance Adams (25) steadied things to eventually eclipse the total. Regal Masters X1 ended on 96-5 in 22.5 overs. Dharam Persaud took 2-25 from 5 overs for the losers while Ricky Deonarine took 2-16 from his five overs. Regal Masters now move on to compete in the quarter-final.
Meanwhile, Street Warriors of Lusignan tasted their first success from three outings when they defeated Marshon SC by 9 wickets. The latter team won the toss and batted first. They were then routed out for a measly 31 in 14.4 overs.
Captain Dawn Budram led from the front, taking 3 wickets for a miserly 3 runs in 3 overs that tore the heart out of the Marshon batting. Street Warriors then lashed off the required total (32-1) in 4 overs with opening bat Mellissa Cummings showing her class with an unbeaten knock of 14 off 7 balls.
The competition will continue this weekend with two Masters matches at the Demerara Cricket Club ground. Success Masters XI will tackle Everest CC Over-40 at 10:00AM while Regal Masters XI face Savage Masters XI.
