Dear Editor,
The recent floods in Diamond and Grove as well as areas on the West Bank of the Demerara River again highlight the pathetic performance of Robert Persaud and his sidekick, Lionel Wordsworth.
They both remind me of the Guyana Fire Service. They rush to put out a fire with empty fire tenders resulting in huge losses for property owners. Totally unprepared! The same with the two persons mentioned above. They only pretend to react when the damage is done.
What is required is some automated mechanism to sense the level of water on both sides of the koker and turn on the pump or raise an automated koker door as is necessary. The operator should be the redundant part of this process.
Along with this, some alert administrative process should be in place when there is heavy rainfall and have these operators on standby during these times.
We live on a strip of land that is prone to flooding. Changing weather patterns are making it worse. This government is now an expert on changing weather patterns. We must have a central emergency unit that can take care of this problem of potential flooding by alerting and ensuring relevant personnel are at their posts when required.
The same with fire and crime. We can’t just go to sleep and deal with it when the problem has reached disastrous proportions.
All the construction in the capital Georgetown has resulted in drains being blocked and the city flooded with just a few inches or rain. Why can’t we systematically clear all the drains and have a proper administrative process to identify same as well as to collect data on the major reasons some were blocked?
The PPP must remove these persons that are irresponsible. If the PPP is incapable of finding competent persons, then it will be voted out come next elections. People are fed up.
This government has wasted millions of dollars on this LCDS that is not going to materialise into anything of significance.
So much time and effort wasted.
The Finance Minister stands in the gutter or maybe he’ll say he didn’t realise it was the gutter because of the flood waters and embarks on a filth attack against an international institution. He spouts garbage that is totally irrelevant for someone who is purported to be a professional. Where does the PPP find these people?
