BRUSSELS –The European Commission, citing safety concerns, on Tuesday removed Suriname’s Blue Wings from its list of airlines permitted to fly within the European Union, according to the Wall Street Journal yesterday.
Blue Wings was added to the blacklist as a consequence of a “series of accidents suffered by this airline and serious deficiencies revealed during ramp inspections of its aircraft,” the Commission said.
Airlines which do not satisfy Europe’ security criteria are routinely blacklisted.
The list, established in 2006, is updated regularly and contains 278 names, mostly small carriers in Africa and Asia.
Blue Wings, in April 2008 and May 2010, was involved with two deadly crashes, respectively claiming the lives of 19 and eight persons.
The Commission also banned Iran Air, pointing especially to concerns over their Airbus A-320s, Boeing B-727s and B-747s, which will now also be excluded from flying to the EU.
The bans were set in place following visits to the country where the Commission tested the fleet’s maintenance and repair systems. About two-thirds of Iran Air’s fleet is now banned from flying into EU airspace, the Commission said.
Two Indonesian carriers, Metro Batavia and Indonesia Air Asia, have been removed from the list after they made “significant safety improvements.”
All Indonesian airlines were placed on the blacklist three years ago following a spate of crashes. Six Indonesian airlines have since been removed from the list,
