The Guyana Red Cross Society has begun preparations for a new regional initiative which will target key populations that have higher risks of HIV. The initiative will also involve the collaboration of the Bahamas and Jamaica Red Cross Societies with the American Red Cross. Whilst initial preparations are ongoing, the actual programme will begin during the summer of this year.
The Guyana leg of the initiative will focus on miners and sex workers in the remote hinterland areas. This group has over the years been targeted for various public awareness programmes, and has been tagged as vulnerable and underserved. Investigations have also been carried out regarding Trafficking in Persons issues regarding this group.
In Jamaica, the focus will be on men who have sex with men (MSM), and in the Bahamas, the target will be high risk youth.
The programme will offer opportunities for persons in these groups to increase their knowledge which will in turn affect their attitudes towards the issues linked with HIV. It will also address the gaps and needs of individuals with high-risk sex behaviours and help them build skills through peer-education.
The programme will also offer opportunities for counselling and testing; support groups for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs); condom distribution and referrals to local health services; and behaviour change communication strategies. It is hoped that the use of radio and mass media campaigns as well as theatre-based community wide events to raise awareness on a larger scale will assist the programme.
The goal of the proposed programme is to reduce the incidence of HIV and to create an enabling environment for PLWHAs and key populations at higher risk in Jamaica, Guyana, the Bahamas, and Haiti
The objectives also include improving HIV/AID- related knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviours and strengthening the capacity of the Jamaica, Guyana, Bahamas, and Haitian Red Cross Societies to deliver a sustained, effective and scaled up HIV Programme.
