Kwakwani Secondary School balled to an emphatic and historic feat at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Monday night when the school won three titles in as many groups with the curtains coming down on the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF).
Kwakwani opened their title hunt when they held their nerves against a strong challenge from the Saint Stanislaus College team to eventually win 58-54 claiming the Under-16 title with three of its main offensive players in double figures at the end.
Eon Meredith scored 21 points to lead the three players that destroyed Saints. Leonard Primo had 15 points while Orwin Samuels scored 11 points. Darroll Williams dropped 30 points for Saints while Lorenzo Bethune, the tournament MVP, scored 13 points.
Kwakwani then continued their sojourn toward complete dominance in the 2010 tournament with their Under-18 team demolishing Marian Academy with ease. The Region 10-based School won 75-50 against a team that lacked enough offensive prowesses.
Dave Plass dropped 40 points while Dominique Douglas and Cleon Danjou scored 10 each for a visibly superior Kwakwani side that set up a Championship showdown with the win. Tequain Vieira scored 21 points and Selvaughn Moseley 18 points for Marian.
Before a colossal and dramatic battle for the Championship, Linden Foundation ensured that they at least secure the only other title up for grabs with a 91-73 points win against Saints which made them the favourites to win the overall champion-of-champion trophy.
Geoffrey LaRose scored 26 points while Linden Fraser added 22 points for Linden Foundation as Theodore Tappin offered support with 21 points. Marlon Persaud had 13 points to complete their well rounded offensive attack on a hapless Saints unit.
Cowen Gittens was the leading scorer for Saints in Open final while Neil Gordon scored 26 and Seon Braithwaite 13 points in support. Kwakwani fittingly brought the curtains down with come-from-behind win the Championship game to determine the best team.
Kwakwani not only came from 18 points down in the first half to a one point deficit at halftime, the team assumed a commanding second half offensive grip with Plass reminding the vocal and aggressive crowd that he is carrying a community on his shoulders.
The guard took matters into his own hand in the second half and along with Douglas, contrived to dominate Linden Foundation. Plass dumped in 23 points with Douglas adding 14 points in an outstanding performance. Larose scored 19 points for Linden Foundation while Fraser added 13 points.
