A 33-year-old, Chinese national who has been operating his restaurant for the past three years in Guyana, is thanking God for his survival following his near death experience Thursday morning.
The incident left him with first degree burns and as a patient at the Suddie Public Hospital.
Jians Yao Young, who lives and operates his restaurant at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast, is being treated for burns he sustained to his face, hands and feet.
Yaswe Young, the injured man’s brother said that he was at Anna Regina doing some shopping and it was only when he returned that he learnt of the incident from an employee, Myrtle Da Silva.
He said he was told by the employee that his brother, Jians, was at the time igniting his gas stove which was unknowingly left on at the time.
A Ms. Da Silva who also spoke with this newspaper said that she was in the dining area, packaging pepper sauce when she was alerted by a loud explosion which came from the kitchen area.
Owner of the building, Mrs. Sushila Singh, 61, whose house is situated aback of the restaurant, said that she heard the loud explosion but thought that the sound came from the road.
The fire service which was also in the area at the time was later summoned. According to Officer K. Harry, the stove was said to be attached to a100lb gas cylinder which was housed outside of the restaurant.
