Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire yesterday ordered that an independent mental examination should be conducted on murder accused Kenrick Heywood, to determine whether or not he is capable to stand trial.
Heywood is accused of killing Jairam Shivram on November 18, 2003. He was committed to stand trial in the High Court on January 13, 2006.
Yesterday the state-assigned lawyer attorney at law Peter Hugh said that after speaking with Heywood he thinks that the evaluation should be done to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
The lawyer opined that Heywood may be suffering from some mental disorder and as such it should be addressed.
Hugh further explained that Heywood might not have been suffering from the disorder at the time of the incident, but could not give certain instructions.
State Prosecutors Rondell Weever and Latcmie Rahamat, did not have any objections to the lawyer’s application.
Justice George in response to the lawyer’s application ordered that the examination should be done by a registered practitioner. She further stated that the status of the report should be presented at the October opening of the Criminal Assizes.
