– after turning self in
A 26-year-old taxi driver who fled the scene after hitting down a couple near Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was remanded to prison yesterday after turning himself in.
Dinod Narine, of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to render assistance when he appeared in the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Priya Beharry ordered the accused to return to court today.
It is alleged that Narine was driving a taxi, HB 6558 on Sunday, June 27, last, near Little Diamond, when he struck down motorcyclist Geoffrey Orlan Mc Arthur, 34, and his reputed wife, 31-year-old Marcia Stephens, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
Mc Arthur sustained a broken right leg and injuries to his chest, while Stephens, who is reportedly pregnant, suffered injuries to one of her legs.
Police alleged that Narine fled the scene but that eyewitnesses identified the vehicle, which was reportedly seen turning into Times Square Street, Grove.
The taxi driver turned himself in to ranks at the Grove Police Station on Monday and was placed in custody.
