The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be hosting its annual summer camps for students for the August holidays. It is scheduled to commence on July 12 and conclude on August 27.
The camps will be set up in all 10 Administrative Regions and youths from around the country will have the opportunity to engage in constructive activities during the holidays.
Director of Youth, Carl Brandon, in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency stated that the Ministry will focus on five thematic areas: Education, Parenthood/ family life, Employment, Health and Leadership/civic education.
The Ministry is catering for more than 60 camps, and will be held under the theme, ‘A youth aware is a youth prepared.’
Brandon noted that this theme was chosen on the premise that once youths are informed, they would be aware of various issues and would be in a better position to make informed choices.
He noted that in 1998, there were less than 10 camps, which catered for a maximum of 500 children. However, over the years the number of camps has increased and these have been catering for thousands of children annually.
The camps will cater for persons between 12-17 years and will feature art and craft, tours to historical sites, hiking, health and environmental education, fitness, music and dance.
In addition, there will be a Taxidermy Children’s Camp at the National Museum, a programme which trains youths in the preservation of animal and plant life and concludes with participants receiving certificates. It caters for eight to twelve-year-olds.
The Ministry in collaboration with the Walter Roth Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology will also be working to educate youths on becoming archaeologists.
Since its creation in 1998, the Ministry has trained over 13, 000 youths in a variety of skills during the August holidays.
