Tradewind Tankers, a shipping Company based in Barcelona, Spain was declared the official sponsor of the Castrol Strikers / Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF)-organised Tournament which was officially launched yesterday in the Boardroom of GuyOil Company, Kitty Branch.
Captain Antonio Rodriguez, who represented the Company, handed over a cheque worth $500,000 to Castrol Striker’s Dexter Hoppie in the presence of GVF President Lenox Shuffler, Managing Director of GuyOil Badri Persaud and other Company Executives.
Rodriguez speaking at the occasion said that they’ve been involved in business in this country for the past 34 years operating as the designated shipping agent for petroleum and oil and felt that it was time that they got into the other areas of social responsibility that could help develop the country.
“We felt that it was time that we aid in the development of the country in other areas and I decided to approach Mr. Persaud and ask his advice as to which area of sport we could get involved in. We also felt that with so many Guyanese seafarers employed by our Company it would be a fitting gesture for us to give back,” Rodriguez pointed out.
Rodriguez said that he was aware that cricket is the #1 sport played in Guyana, but left it up to the Managing Director to decide on which sport was best to offer their sponsorship and he chose volleyball and the rest is history.
He promised that the current sponsorship is not a one off offer, but will continue for many years to come.
Persaud in his remarks spoke of the Company’s relationship with Tradewind Tankers which dates back to 34 years, adding that the discussions were first held just under two months ago when Rodriguez expressed an interest in incorporating the business with that of their social responsibility.
“I felt that because Castrol Strikers and volleyball as a whole had been dormant for sometime, whatever contribution Tradewind Tankers was willing to make should be given to the sport and I subsequently indicated my choice to Mr. Rodriguez and we are here today to officially confirm their commitment to the tournament,” Persaud said.
Shuffler said that he was happy that Castrol was partnering with the GVF to push the game back to where it was some years ago.
“It is a sport that has lost its way in the mainstream in the City even though it is being played a lot in the hinterland and other areas and this particular tournament shows that the club wants to get the sport moving again and that could provide the sport that it needs,” Shuffler indicated.
He said he expects the tournament to be well organised and thanked the sponsor who he referred to as no strangers to volleyball, having assisted in team travel some years ago.
The tournament will run from July 17-September 18.
It is the first of its kind to be staged in Guyana and participation is expected from Linden, Berbice, Georgetown and West Demerara and will run over three months with games to be played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), West Demerara and Berbice two weekends in each month.
Three formats will be used and they are the 2s, 4s and 6s with teams needing a minimum of seven players.
The first two months the winners and second placed finishers will receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively, while the overall champion will take away a top prize of $80,000, runners-up $40,000 and third place $20,000.
The dates for play are as follows: July 17 & 24 CASH and Goed Fortuin; August 14 & 28 Berbice and September 11 &18 CASH.
