The preliminary inquiry into the tampering with witness case against Chandra Narine Sharma and five of his associates was almost dismissed due to the prosecution’s tardiness.
Sharma, his son-in-law Ravi Mangar, Tyrone Ali, Mark Reid, Raywattie Ramsaywack and Doodnauth, were all separately charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with witness.
Magistrate Geeta Chandan Edmond was yesterday almost in the process of dismissing the matter when Special Prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin walked in.
Minutes before he had walked in the Magistrate stated that she was of the opinion that the prosecution was making a “mockery of the court”.
She said that it was highly inexcusable for the prosecution to behave in that manner.
Prosecutor Datadin later apologised to the court for his tardiness, and the preliminary inquiry finally got underway.
However, the court only took evidence relating to the charge levelled against Mark Reid and Gizmos and Gadgets owner Ravi Mangar.
The prosecution’s first witness was Corporal Suraj Singh who gave evidence in chief about the allegations against Reid and Mangar and also about his role in the investigation.
He was later crossed examined by attorneys at law Vic Puran and Mark Waldron.
During the cross examination Singh, who hesitated a few times, was cautioned by the Magistrate to directly answer the questions which were being asked by the lawyers.
The matter was later adjourned to July 1, when two more witnesses are expected to give evidence.
Sharma and Tyrone Ali’s matter is expected to be called up on July 1.
Lawyers for the accused on numerous occasions had asked for the matters to be dismissed for want of prosecution.
The lawyers had argued that two months after Sharma and his associates were charged the prosecution should have started the preliminary inquiry, since they were so eager to charge the persons.
Sharma, Ravi Mangar, Tyrone Ali, Mark Reid, Raywattie Ramsaywack and Doodnauth are all on a $100,000 bail which was granted by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
