The 12th annual Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey Memorial Schools basketball competition commenced at the Vryman’s Erven basketball court, in New Amsterdam on June 14 with five school participating.
Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS) were the participating schools.
Results of the games played were as follows: – In the first encounter TASS won from NAMS 46-37. At Halftime the score was 21-14 in favour of TASS. Top scoring for TASS was Jamal Felix with 21 points while Jermain Lambert supported with 10. For NAMS, Hubern Evans with 12pts and Martin Durant 9pts were their main contributors.
The second game was not played because BHS fail to show up for their encounter with VESS, thus giving the boys from Vryman’s a walk over.
Day two saw CSS beating VESS 39-20. Top scoring for CSS were Jason Gladstone with 18pts and Devon Hunt who got 13. For VESS Tyrone Dey notched up 12 with support from Kevin Patterson with 8.
In the second game NAMS got the better of BEI 29-27in a close encounter. NAMS were led to their win once again by Martin Durant with 11 and Hubern Evans who got 8 points.
For BEI Thurston Broad with 10pts and Shamar Richards with 8 were their top scorers.
Action on day three saw wins for TASS and VESS. In the first game TASS won 50-38 over BEI. Jamal Felix with a game high 22 points led the way with support from Ryan Caesar 14 and Jermain Lambert 10.
For BEI Thurston Broad 11and Shamar Richards 10points help to put up some resistance. VESS then gained a walk over from BHS for the second time.
In semi-final play, NAMS edged out VESS 24-22. With Hubern Evans 9pts and Martin Durant 6pts again leading the way. For VESS Tyrone Day had 10 points while Keion De Jesus assisted with 8. The second game between TASS and CSS saw TASS gaining walk over after their opponents failed to show up.
The final is expected to be played shortly. The tournament is being coordinated by National coach Kirk Fraser.
