Police yesterday released a local businessman whom they detained in connection with the execution style killing of 26-year-old Quincy Jamal Beete last Saturday.
The man was held shortly after the discovery of Beete’s body in a house on George Street, Werk-en-Rust. The man was detained for questioning on the basis that he had caused the arrest of another man who was said to be associated with Beete.
According to reports, the businessman, who is also a Rural Sergeant, had caused the police to arrest the other man and detain his car on the suspicion that he was trailing the businessman’s wife on Friday.
Investigators believe that since Beete was reportedly associated with the other man, and he turned up dead the following day, the businessman could have provided them with information for their investigation. However, they are so far unable to link the businessman to Beete’s death. Beete was the brother of 17-year-old wanted man ‘Cobra’, who is being sought by the police in connection with a series of robberies.
Initially, many were of the view that Beete was mistakenly killed for his wanted brother.
However, the dead man’s relatives said that this could not have been the case since Beete along with another brother were held by the police two weeks ago and were kept in custody for 72 hours.
Beete, a horse cart operator, was found dead with a bullet wound to the head in an abandoned building, which is up for sale. Marks of violence on his body suggest that he was beaten and tortured before he was executed. His relatives are now expressing fear for their lives.
