Two persons have been confirmed dead while a third is in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital following a two-vehicle smash up on the No.2 East Canje Public Road, Saturday night.
Dead are Tony Tayloo called Rocky, 25, of 383 No 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice and Surendradyal Kalipersaud called Emran, 29, of 75 Sheet Anchor, Berbice and also of Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
Reports are that two cars, HB 7214, driven by 29-yr-old Shawn Ramsarran called ‘Fat Boy’ of Lot 4, Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice and HB 6777 driven by Steve Ramcharran, 23, of 58 Stanleytown were racing along the No 2 Public Road around 17:30 hrs when they came into contact with a cow that was idling on the road. It is understood that HB 7214 then came into contact with HB 6777, which caused it to careen off the road into a veranda of a house at which the popular Stanley workshop is located. The car uprooted one of the house posts before coming to rest on the fence separating the yard from another.
In the meantime, HB 7214 turned turtle a few times, striking Tayloo, who was cycling on the road to purchase phone cards, and reportedly killed him instantly.
Kalipersaud, who was in HB 7214 was thrown out and was left lying on the road. The car ended up in the roadside drain.
The driver of HB 7214, Ramsarran, was half way out of the vehicle where he was found. They were all picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where Tayloo was pronounced dead on arrival and Kalipersaud died after.
At Tayloo’s home, his distraught mother, Dena Tayloo could not hold back her emotions, as her son was the sole breadwinner of the family. The woman also lost her eldest daughter a few years back.
She said her son was very kind and hard working. He had just left home to purchase a phone card in the shop.
About five minutes after he left, Dena Tayloo heard the sound of an impact on the road and immediately had a strange feeling. Not long after, her worst fears were confirmed. Tayloo’s employer, Rafeek Kassim of Rafeek Kassim’s Construction, was very upset. The businessman said that Tayloo was his Foreman and his ‘right-hand’ man, who handled most of his transactions. He said that the police should be more proactive in dealing with people who drink and drive and use the roads senselessly.
Like most persons, Kassim was adamant that the vehicles were racing. He also said that something should be done about the cows and other animals on the roads.
He wants the authorities to take blood samples of both drivers involved in the accident for testing. Tayloo leaves to mourn his mother, two sisters Abigail, 14, Alisha, eight and a brother Joel, four-years-old along with other relatives.
Over at Kalipersaud’s residence at 75 Sheet Anchor Village, his father, popular mechanic and welder Roy, was devastated. He said his only son who is also a mechanic, lives in Tortola and had only returned home on Monday on a surprise visit. He had planned to return to the BVI next week. Roy Kalipersaud said that around 19:45 hrs, a friend called and informed them that his son was involved in an accident. He, along with others immediately hurried to the hospital, but by the time they reached there his son was already dead having suffered massive injuries. He said that his son had a lot of money on him, including over US$1500, a chain and his cell phones, but all had disappeared.
The dead man’s mother, Laureen Kalipersaud was too distraught to speak. Surendradyal Kalipersaud leaves to mourn his wife Farina in Tortola and a daughter Sheenika, eight-years-old in Linden.
Over at Ramsarran’s house, his brother Andrew, also a hire car driver said that his brother is still unconscious, although he has improved from Saturday night. According to Andrew, he is feeling a lot of pain and the doctors were expected to perform a series of x-rays on him. He said he understood that a cow caused the accident but he could not say what his brother’s activities were before the accident.
Officer-in-Charge of Traffic in B Division, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Adonis said that one person is in custody.
In relation to the breathalyzer test on the drivers, one was done on Ramcharran and he was cleared. Adonis said that at the moment they cannot do anything to Ramsarran because he is still hospitalised and is under doctors’ care.
Residents in the area however commended the police for responding promptly to the accident scene.
