Centenarian Belle Haywood of Lot 137 Campbellville Housing Scheme will be a 103 today.
This amazing lady, who is young at heart and jovial in character, is the last of five children and proud mother of five with countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born on 21 June 1907 under the zodiac, Cancer, this centenarian is sharp in memory and has lived her life in a religious manner for as long as she can recall.
According to Ms Haywood, she has been a conservative individual all her life, and has been able to nurture and care for her children and grandchildren.
However, she is at an age where her grandson must now care for her. “I am glad for my grandson (Terrence Codagon).”
She recalled as a young lady, her father died and she attended St. George’s School where she never finished because of poverty. Haywood explained that each morning before attending school, she had to assist her mother to sell in the market since her mother was left to care for five children.
The centenarian disclosed that the younger generation has to join and “hold unto church and Jesus and he will never fail you.” Since she has placed her life and faith in God, she never turned back.
She added that presently, she is a member of the Lutheran Redeemer Church and is the eldest member.
She said the world has changed rapidly and with all these changes, life will continue to be a wonder that unravels with time.
Ms Haywood revealed that her favourite dish is pepper pot and fufu, which she continues to enjoy to this day.
While acknowledging that proper food is important for good health, she stressed that God and prayers are more essential to longevity.
Over the years, the number of centenarians has been increasing in Guyana while the life expectancy rate is now at 67.
