– Top seed Squires moves on
Junior national player Gavin Lewis’ fairytale run was ended on Thursday when he fell to senior player Leyland Leacock in three closely contested sets 6-2 5-7 6-3 as play in the GBTI Open Tennis Championships continued at the Bank’s Hard-courts.
Lewis, who has shown remarkable improvement since last year was responsible for the exit of veteran Carlos Adams earlier in the competition.
After dropping the first set to Leacock, the country’s top junior player rebounded in the second to send the match into a decider.
The two held serve in the third until Leacock broke at 4-3, before winning the next two games to advance to the semi-finals where he will face Jeremy Miller.
Meanwhile, in results of other matches:
Men’s Singles-
Phillip Squires (#1seed) defeated Gavin Barckoy 6-0, 6-0 to remain unchallenged and seems to have an easy path to the final.
Jeremy Miller (#2) def. Sandeep Chand 6-2, 6-0. Miller played an exceptional game with solid ground-strokes after being challenged initially and won all the important points to take the match easily.
Men’s Doubles:
Daniel Lopes /Gavin Lewis defeated Albert Madramootoo/ Steve David Longe 6-4, 6-2.

Daniel Lopes (#2) def. Saevion David Longe 6-2, 6-1
