Bang Monedderlust 3-0; Cougars edge NA United 3-2 for 3rd
Rosignol United are the 2010 Coca Cola / Berbice Football Association Senior knock-out champs, lifting the championship trophy after defeating Monedderlust 3-0 on Saturday last under lights at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground.
Watched by a large and appreciative crowd, the game turned out to be a thrilling match-up despite the final score. In the battle for third place, Cougars prevailed in a tense clash over New Amsterdam United 3-2.
In the final, Monedderlust tried their utmost to keep Rosignol at bay through some compact marking at midfield and in defence; Elvis Croal and Travis ‘Dread’ Henry leading the former BFA League champs. As the game progressed though, Rosignol found good rhythm led in attack by Olvis Mitchell, Delbert Wilson and Justin Collins.
With 32 minutes gone, Rosignol’s principal scorer Delroy ‘Tugi’ Fraser opened the champions’ account. The ever present striker Olvis Mitchell sent Rosignol 2-0 in the 53rd minute after receiving a through pass from Wilson who did well controlling the centre for the champs. Sylvester Smith who struggled for form during the tournament was belatedly introduced into the game and put the icing on the cake for Rosignol with a goal of his own four minutes to full time (86th).
Commenting after the game, Team Manager John Skeete said he was pleased with Rosignol’s performance, singling out goalkeeper Roncy Caleb and strikers Olvis Mitchell and Delroy Fraser as players who made a big difference for them.
In the third place playoff, Cougars overcame New Amsterdam United 3-2 in extra time after a 2-2 deadlock at the end of regulation time.
Charles Williams (7) and Horace Roache (50) were the players on target for Cougars while Kelvin Joseph (55) and Adrian ‘Garnett’ Adams (67) leveled for New Amsterdam.
Winston Benjamin was the hero for Cougars as he netted the winner 7 minutes into extra time to seal victory for Cougars; it was Benjamin’s 9th goal and the most by any player in the tournament.
The BFA is expressing its gratitude to Banks DIH Marketing Executive Carlton Joao who insisted that the final two games be played under lights.
The games were well supported by Berbicians.
The presentation of prizes and trophies is set for today at the Winners Circle Sports Bar, No. 22 Bel Air (Hopetown) West Coast Berbice beginning at 17:00hrs.
