Dear Editor,
I’m an 18-year-old male, I’m writing for the first time. I grew up in Alberttown, in a middle class family; my mother is East Indian and my father is Black.
I wasn’t giving the opportunity to complete high school like so many youngsters out there, but I was given an opportunity at the Critchlow Labour College. I had to leave because of the ‘Government of Guyana’ withdrawing the yearly subvention.
Now I attend the Government Technical Institute (GTI). I’m pursuing Electrical Engineering, I’ve completed the first year with four As and two Bs. The road wasn’t a smooth one.
I sit and wonder like others if the Government of Guyana cares about the poor young people of this land. I read a column written by Nigel Jason on July 22 of last year, titled “Generation Change the Young of Guyana”. He stated that Guyana is divided by race. It’s true, racism is still alive they just are concealing it; He also stated that the PPP Government has failed us, they have indeed.
We the young people need to show the government that we are capable of changing our circumstances and show we have control over our destiny.
Let me say for the past 18 years I’ve lived I haven’t seen or heard of any changes or progress.
I’ll tell you what Nigel Jason told me; “In my life time I’ve been exposed to drug-trafficking, corruption, State-sanctioned torture by the army and police, legal and illegal migration, death squads and massacres”. This is not progress; it hurts to see where this country is going.
I’m a big supporter and hope to be a follower of Mr. Frederick Kissoon and I must agree with him when he says Guyana is a failed state. Isn’t there enough to convince the Guyanese people that Guyana is indeed a failed State?
The headlines in the daily newspapers aren’t enough? Isn’t the phony statement the government makes enough? ‘Yes it’s enough’ so it’s time for us (young and old) to make a change and speak out, we could clearly see what is going on; Young people been killed and torture by the police, Ministers accused of criminal activities and not investigated, investigations are always ongoing.
This needs to stop. We need to go back to the days when people shouted “Enough is Enough”
Quincy Savory
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
