Wakenaam’s drainage and irrigation infrastructure yesterday received a major boost after Government handed over a $35M long-reach excavator.
A $24M drainage structure at Amersfoort was also commissioned and another $20M sluice is to be built, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, told residents of the island.
The excavator was a commitment made by President Bharrat Jagdeo to the community a few weeks ago while he was on a visit there.
It was disclosed, yesterday, that the island never had an excavator and would have to “borrow” from the region from time to time.
According to the Minister, the excavator had landed on the wharf and was earmarked for another area, but it was decided to deploy it instead to Wakenaam because of the pressing needs there. It is a new chapter in agriculture for the island, Persaud noted.
The residents of the community hard hit by the recent dry conditions of the El Nino weather conditions, had also received millions of dollars in seed paddy. Fertilizers will soon be coming to help lessen the losses.
Also at the handing over of the excavator were Region Three Chairman, Julius Faerber; Head of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Lionel Wordsworth; and officials of the Guyana Rice Development Board and the local NDC.
According to Faerber, the island plays a key agriculture role in the country and this is reflected in the several projects that are on stream.
This year, $4M will be spent to rehabilitate a main bridge on the public road with a trailer deployed to the island to help.
Government will also be spending $50M to fix seven roads with another $5M set aside for the building of a mortuary at the Health Centre.
Additionally, there will be extension at the island’s secondary school to cater for the overcrowding and the clearing of several trenches.
