…police awaiting Doctor’s report on PM
Residents of Patentia, a West Bank Demerara community, were in a very solemn mood yesterday as one of its youngest members who was killed under questionable circumstances was laid to rest.
That victim was 16-year-old Kelvin Anthony Fraser who was shot and killed by a police rank one week ago.
Upon entering the Patentia, West Bank Demerara village, each lamp post was draped with black flags bearing the name ‘Kello”.
As the hearse arrived in the community it made its first stop at the school which Fraser last attended and where he spent his last moments.
At the Patentia Secondary School, dozens of students and teachers from other schools turned out to view his remains. Some of his fellow students broke into tears as they filed past his casket. The teen’s father sat beside him with an umbrella shading him from the sun.
Then it was off to his residence where hundreds gathered to bid their final goodbye.
At the teen’s home, close relatives tried to console each other as they wept bitterly at the sight of his remains in a casket.
Some were heard lamenting how peaceful he looked— as if he was asleep. Others were heard conversing, asking the question how the rank that shot Fraser can sleep at nights knowing he took an innocent teen’s life.
Throughout the viewing, the teen’s mother spent her time upstairs in their house as the scene over her son’s casket was too much for her.
After almost two hours of viewing at the teen’s home, he was then taken to the New Life Full Gospel Fellowship, in Patentia.
Over at the church there were countless tributes to the slain youth. In almost every tribute, the teen was described as responsible, kind, reserved and loving.
Among those paying tribute to the slain teen was activist Mark Benschop and Columnist Freddie Kissoon. Others included a representative from the Ministry of Education, and fellow students.
Many encouraged Fraser’s family to leave vengeance to God, but reiterated their call for justice to be served.
Mark Benschop told the gathering that he empathises with the family since he lost a son while he was incarcerated.
He further apologised to the family for any inconvenience caused because of his involvement in the protest. The teen was laid to rest late yesterday afternoon at the Patentia cemetery.
Fraser was shot and killed last Monday by a police rank who was at the time responding to reports of males molesting a school girl at the Patentia Secondary school. At the time, Fraser was in a classroom with a female friend. However, upon seeing the police beating other male students, Fraser reportedly ran to safety but was closely followed by an armed rank.
The police claimed that the sixteen-year-old who recently recovered from a broken leg and an appendix surgery was involved in a scuffle with the rank during which he was shot and killed.
In the meantime, the police said they are awaiting a detailed report from the doctor who performed the post mortem examination on Fraser as they continue their investigation. This newspaper has also been told that the police rank, Constable John remains under close arrest.
