Businessman, Beni Sankar, is the new President of the National Aquaculture Association of Guyana (NAAG) following the body’s fourth Annual General Meeting last week.
According to a statement from NAAG, Kris Jugdeo has been elected Vice-President; the Secretary is Lloyda Angus; Dr. Leslie Chin is the new Treasurer while the Assistant-Secretary Treasurer is Tejnarine Geer.
Outgoing President of NAAG, Dr. Chin, in his remarks, said that despite a “slowdown” of the association, individual aquaculture businesses have been moving forward and that progress can still be seen.
“This is a fresh beginning, and we’re going to push aquaculture and move the industry forward so more people can see that farming fish has a positive potential for Guyana.” Sankar said in his acceptance speech.
The association will work alongside the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agriculture Diversification Programme (ADP), which aims to assist the development of both agriculture and aquaculture.
Sankar also noted that NAAG holds a seat on the Private Sector Commission, an indication that there is faith in developing an aquaculture sector. In addition to electing new leadership, NAAG members approved a new constitution that narrows the association’s focus to the twin goals of advocacy and awareness of aquaculture in Guyana.
NAAG had its beginnings in mid 2007, advocating the development of the aquaculture sector in Guyana, and drawing in interested people from all over the country at a time when there was no infrastructure for such an industry.
Today, NAAG said in its statement, that it boasts members from all parts of the aquaculture value chain, from hatchery to aquaculture farms, and also works closely with the Government of Guyana, which operates an aquaculture research facility at Mon Repos on the East Coast Demerara.
