Skipper Ricky Deonarine struck a brilliant, unbeaten 104 to spur Georgetown Floodlights to a comfortable 75-run victory over Industry Super Kings XI in the final of the best of three Andrew Arts 25-over softball match played last Friday evening at the National Park Tarmac.
The right-handed former Demerara Inter-County softball player smacked seven sixes and a similar number of fours as his team galloped to 252 for six off the 25 overs, while the East Coast Demerara combination could only reach 177 all out in the 22nd over.
Man-of-the-match Deonarine came to the crease with his team struggling at 45-3 in the 9th over and began his assault by hitting three consecutive fours. He survived a chance when on 45.
Deonarine joined forces with Ravendra Madholall in an entertaining fifth-wicket 104-run stand. Madholall hit three sixes in his 32, while other useful support came from opener Ramesh Sunich with 31 and the veteran Wayne Jones, who clobbered three sixes and a four in his unbeaten 32.
Doodie Sookram was the chief wicket-taker for the visitors with two for 36 off his allotted five overs.
Experienced Surendra Nauth batted purposely with a defiant 90 for Industry Super Kings. He hit seven sixes and three fours. Orin Hutson chipped in with 22 as Ramchand Ragbeer grabbed three wickets for 29 runs from four overs, while Wallace Joseph also claimed three wickets for 30 runs off three overs.
Patrick Khan and Mike Singh were also in the wicket column with two victims apiece.
On the losing team, Nauth was adjudged the best batsman, while best bowler was Sookram; best catcher was Hutson and Radesh Kawal copped the best fieldsman prize.
On the winning side, best batsman prize went to Madholall, while Ragbeer took home the best bowler award; best fieldsman was Sunich, while Paul Muffler grabbed the best catcher prize.
All received a trophy each, compliments of Andrew Arts, while Khan, who scored a century in the first game, and Brian Sookram for Industry, also for making 90 in the second game, received a trophy each.
The two teams will now meet in another series scheduled to commence on June 25 at the same venue. This series is sponsored by Bedi Ramjewan’s Auto Parts of Industry, East Coast Demerara.
