Popular city businessman, Milton Brandford has told Kaieteur News that he is in fear of his life after his complaint about the harassment of his nephew Dr. Colis Brandford of the Georgetown Hospital. According to Brandford, the dilemma started with taunts from a group of policemen in black clothes traveling around the city on motorcycles. They would stop his nephew and taunt him saying, “Yuh uncle doan lef nutting with we.”
The senior Brandford told Kaieteur News that the situation became overbearing and he decided to complain. He took his nephew to see Senior Superintendent Colin West of the Tactical Service Unit. Despite West’s intervention, the senior Brandford said the harassment continued but this time, the motorcycle unit had given way to another group of cops and they had moved from his nephew to him. According to Brandford, policemen in open back vehicles would drive up to him and request to search his vehicle. They searched his car on Friday afternoon. Then on Saturday morning, another group of cops descended upon him at the Stabroek Market Square and requested to search his car.
Brandford refused to be searched on the road, demanding to be taken to the Brickdam Police Station. He was told to drive there. He waited for one hour only to be told that he would have to wait for the Duty Officer to be present. In the meantime, the open back pick-up was driven away. On arrival, the Duty Officer inquired about the nature of situation and when it was explained she advised Mr. Brandford to go on his way. Brandford said he was not taking any chances and insisted that the car be searched. Like on previous searches, nothing unusual, curious or illegal turned up. Milton Brandford intoned that he is now fearful for his life because he believes an attitude of vindictiveness prevails against him particularly by a policeman that belongs to the motorcycle unit. Kaieteur News was unable to speak to Superintendent West.
