The highlight of the opening day was an impressive win by national junior player Krystal Sukra over GLTA Executive member Grace McCalman as play in the GBTI Open Tennis Competition opened at the sponsor’s Hardcourts in Bel Air.
The pair put on a good show for the large crowd of spectators as they renewed rivalry with Sukra hitting a high percentage of winners to eventually prevailed 6-2 in the first set over McCalman, who battled hard and played some excellent points.
The match was cut short with Sukra leading 2-0 as McCalman had to retire due to an injury.
The opening match saw veteran Carlos Adams returning after a two-year hiatus utilising his experience to prevail easily over junior Saevion David Longe 6-2 6-3, while a marathon match between Mario Niamatalli and Henk Wilkinson ended with a well deserved three-set win for Niamatalli.
Scores in the match were 6-2 3-6 6-1.
Easy wins were recorded for top seeds Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes in the Junior Boys Singles.
