A mechanic attached to the Wings Taxi service was on Thursday placed on $125,000 bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
The man Chandand Heeralall, 23, of Temple Street Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to two counts fraudulent conversion.
The allegation was that Heeralall, between April 1 and April 30, being solely entrusted with $273,000 from Faizul Ali, to do repairs on a motor car, converted the money to his own use. Another charge read that Heeralall between May 28 and June 4, being solely entrusted with $58,000 to purchase car parts, converted the money for his own use.
His lawyer, Vic Puran, in a bail application told the court that he was not a flight risk and had an unblemished record.
The lawyer explained that the police arrested Heeralall at his home. According to the Puran all the charges leveled against his client do not make any sense.
However the virtual complainant, who was present in court, insisted that he gave Heeralall the money so that he could repair his vehicles. The man said that he was informed that Heeralall was taking his parts from his cars and giving them away. According to the virtual complainant Heeralall confessed.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not object to bail but asked for a date that statements could be served on both parties. The magistrate placed Heeralall on $125,000 bail and ordered him to return to court on July 15.
