Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes has been in a number of wars ever since he became a professional boxer. He has been matched against the likes of Lennox Alleyne, Mitchell Rogers and Howard Eastman and even though he lost all three bouts, his crowd pleasing displays made him popular among the pundits who, when Gilkes is on show, have come to expect action packed slugfests irrespective of how the fights end.
Gilkes’ managed to break the losing jinx when in his first appearance on the April edition of the ProAm cards; he fought his heart out and defeated Theophilus King, a tough customer making his professional debut. Following that win Gilkes is brimming with confidence and is calling on all comers to bare their fists. After his most recent call Gilkes received an answer in the form of Anthony Augustin a tough as nails customer who packs a wicked wallop.
The two fighters finalized the deal last Wednesday afternoon at the Avenue of the Republic offices of President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool and already the pre-fight hype has started.
Both boxers have expressed confidence and while Gilkes has been in his most garrulous mood, it was Augustin whose voice sounded the loudest. Ironically, both men are residents of the Laing Avenue. As a matter of fact, they are virtual neighbours, making the fight even more interesting. Every morning the two cross paths as they go about their individual training.
They take great care not to hurl derogatory remarks at each other, maybe out of mutual respect. However, when this reporter quizzed them individually, the bravado and insulting exchanges come to the fore.
In his debut professional bout, Augustin picked on local light/heavyweight champion, Mitchell Rogers and paid dearly for what Rogers termed as ‘disrespectful.’ Notwithstanding Rogers’ vast experience, Augustin held his ground and even though he had entered the bout with a flawless countenance and exited with bumps and bruises, Agustin could have stood proud because he had lasted the distance against a more experienced foe.
Gilkes, who has an unflattering record, might just be reduced to fodder despite his aggressive style. The stocky Gilkes has managed to convince himself that he is better than Augustin. Both fighters deliver crunching punches and it would not be surprising if the fight ends before it is supposed to end.
Apart from this bout fans will be entertained with the Mandessa Moses/Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott catchweight shindig. Moses has had two thrilling fights in the professional arena to date. She defeated Kwinda Rogers in the inaugural ProAm boxing card in Berbice a few months ago.
Her most devastating victory came at the expense of Ali Marques, who she virtually decimated on her way to a knockout victory. Her opponent Walcott has had quite a few battles against the likes of Gwendolyn ‘O’Neil and Sharon Ward among others. Last Wednesday at the signing ceremony, Walcott was brimming with confidence and bellowed the message for all to hear that she would teach Moses a lesson. It would be interesting to observe Walcott in action against Moses who is technically sound and most importantly, packs a punch.
Wilmut Hutson who suffered a loss to Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry two cards ago will match gloves with Orlan Rogers, another Dharry victim. This is a more balanced fight and could produce fireworks if both principals enter the ring with the usual ambitions to win. In the final bout of the professional segment of the card Clive Atwell who commenced his professional career with a
