– CEO calls on players to produce higher standard
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) John Tracey speaking at the opening ceremony of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association -organised Open Tournament said that they were indeed glad to partner the Association in helping to further develop the sport.
Tracey, whose entity is the official sponsor of the tournament was addressing members of the GLTA and players shortly before the first match commenced, at the Bank’s tennis facility in Bel Air yesterday.
The CEO, himself a former player admitted that the game still held his interest and even though he was a bit disappointed that it had not made the same progress as other disciplines.
“It is a sport that has not kept abreast with most of the others and perhaps it is because of the absence of many of the former top players due to migration,” Tracey opined.
He, however, felt that the sport could benefit from the work of the new executive which is led by the persistent Christopher Ram, who Tracey likened to a livewire and keen to get the sport moving in appositive direction.
The GBTI Head, who apart from being a player also managed a team to Martinique, said that that appointment was one of the highpoints of his involvement in the sport.
He also applauded the vigour and vision of the new executive, who according to him knows exactly where they want to go in terms of getting the sport into the mainstream.
Tracey called on the players to produce a high standard of play that will attract potential sponsors because he felt that they have a product to deliver.
He said it is incumbent on the players to lift the standard of their game so that it will generate interest among the corporate community.
“I challenge you to make the sport worthy of securing the interest of the business community so that they will feel inclined to assist the GLTA whenever they make an approach,” Tracey told the gathering that included parents.
Matches were played yesterday and results will be given in the next issue.
