Police are looking for two men who disfigured Mahaica fruit vendor Mr. Shazaad Shaheed last month after luring him out of his home and dousing him with acid.
A police release issued yesterday identified the suspects as ‘Rakesh’ and ‘Makoon’ also of Mahaica.
Shaheed had complained to Kaieteur News that police did not appear to be looking for the culprits behind the brazen attack.
In its release, police said that they had “taken cognizance” of the vendor’s comments and wished to clarify the issue.
According to the release, Mr. Shazaad Shaheed had reported to the police at Mahaica Police Station that he was at home around 02:50hrs on May 16, 2010, when he observed a sudden light.
Upon checking, he saw a green and white motor car pass by driven by Suresh Persaud of Mahaica, whom he knows as ‘Soor’.
The vendor allegedly saw two men, whom he recognized to be ‘Rakesh’ and ‘Makoon’ also of Mahaica, in the back seat of the car.
According to police, Shaheed said that he went back inside his home and later heard ‘Rakesh’ calling him.
“He went outside and saw ‘Rakesh’ and ‘Makoon’ standing at the gate to his premises and ‘Rakesh’ said that someone had given him something to give him (Shaheed),” the release said.
“Shazaad Shaheed said, also, that as he was walking towards his gate he noticed a white car parked some distance away which he recognised as belonging to ‘Soor’, and when he reached the gate ‘Rakesh’ threw acid on him and both men ran away.”
“To date the police have not located ‘Rakesh’ or ‘Makoon’ despite diligent efforts to do so. However, Suresh Persaud called ‘Soor’ was arrested on May 21, last. Investigations revealed that his motor vehicle was grey in colour and he denied being at the scene of the incident.”
Police said that Suresh Persaud’s home was searched and the police found a quantity of firecrackers resulting in him being charged. He appeared at the Mahaica Court where he pleaded not guilty. The matter is continuing before the court while he is on bail.
Meanwhile, the release said that police are “working assiduously” to complete the acid-throwing matter involving Mr. Shazaad Shaheed and are in the process of seeking legal advice, while efforts are continuing to locate ‘Rakesh’ and ‘Makoon.’
