The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is using the hype created by the recent 20/20 World Cup in the Caribbean to sell their inaugural Regional 20/20 tournament which starts in Barbados on July 22.
The WICB is using the slogan ‘Bring it back’ after the ‘Bring it’ tag line was used for the 2010 T/20 World Cup and the WICB yesterday confirmed stories in the Guyana media that the first phase of the competition will be contested next month in Barbados from July 22-25.
Guyana had won a bid to host the second phase which included the semi-finals and final but the unavailability of the Guyana National Stadium due to Rugby resulted in Trinidad being given the second phase which runs from July 28-31. August 1 has been reserved as an alternate date for the Final. Providence is the only venue in Guyana capable of hosting cricket at this level in the evenings and since the Rugby was booked since January and this tournament was only confirmed last month the GCB fail to acquire the facility.
Six traditional regional teams along with the combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) and Canada will compete for the title. The team which wins the competition, once it is not Canada, will qualify to play in the Club Champions League in South Africa in September.
The format for the Tournament will be two groups of four teams. There will be a round robin stage in each group – each team will play three matches – with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will advance to final while the losing semi-finalists will play a third-place play-off.
Matches will be played at 4 pm and 8 pm Guyana time; except on Sunday, July 25 when the start times will be 2 pm and 6 pm.
The WICB also unveiled the lively, colourful, Caribbean T20 tournament logo and the tournament banner – which urges fans to “Bring It Back” and come out, wave their flags, play their music, and create a carnival atmosphere at the matches to celebrate what promises to be 10 days of action-packed cricket in the Caribbean.
Dr Ernest Hilaire, Chief Executive Officer of the WICB said: “This is a very exciting time for cricket in the West Indies. We just staged the hugely successful ICC World T20 Tournament and now we have the inaugural Caribbean T20 Tournament. We expect to see superb action on the field, from the region’s best players, and great excitement off the field, from the lovely Caribbean people in the stands.
Cricket fans all across the world have fallen in love with the short version of the game and we know they will be thrilled with what they see during the Caribbean T20.”
WICB President Julian Hunte disclosed last Sunday evening in Barbados that the prospects of having the Regional 20/20 tournament broadcast by International Television will help to generate interest for West Indies cricket outside of the Region while at the same time promote the Caribbean as a destination of choice.
