The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be filled with glitz and glamour as local celebrities from the athletic and entertainment industries get down on the basketball court in the Fire Basketball Club inaugural ‘Celebrity Charity Game’ Saturday night.
President and Coach of the Club, Kester Gomes told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the basketball games is to help raise funds to provide uniforms for them while Joshua House, the popular boys’ and girls’ orphanage, will benefit from part of the proceeds.
“Our main objectives are to raise funds for our uniforms and give to Joshua House, which is very close to my family.
We plan to make the event an annual feature where we’ll also try to raise the awareness of people to some social problems,” Gomes said.
He informed that their reason for choosing the celebrity game was because all the other themes are exposed already. Gomes said that basketball is already being played at the inter-ward and the schools’ levels, which makes the celebrity event more significant.
Word on the street is that the local celebs have been practicing hard to sharpen their skills as the popular sportsmen and women take on the entertainers in the featured game that will come after Scotia Bank takes on Republic Bank in a ‘battle of the Banks’.
One of the more keenly contested games of the night will be when the University of Guyana take on the Media All-Stars.
The University has just completed its inter-faculty tournament while the Media played in the recent inter-organisation competition.
However, the word on the street has been the hype of the entertainers, who has been singing their victory song on social websites such as Facebook.
Local rapper, Don Gialiani said that he will be the Most Valuable Player for the entertainers on Facebook.
Whether he will rap his way to the award or really entertain with a few moves on the court is still to be seen. Gialiani has on his bench: Jomo Primo, Jory, Brains and a list of other entertainers are likely to perform on a different and more competitive stage.
Meanwhile, national rugby player and now coach, Theodore Henry will team-up with his rugby team-mate, Claudius Butts, national cricketers Leon Johnson and Stephen Jacobs, big-bikes racer Stephen Vieira, Lorian Adams and others on the athletes’ team.
