The eagerly anticipated Digicel Summer Smash National 20/20 cricket competition bowls off on Friday at the Port Mourant ground in Corentyne Berbice with two first-round matches.
Three teams will participate in each of the three county zones before the top 2 teams advance to the Super Six stage.
The three zones are the Berbice ‘Free Zone’, the Demerara ‘Flex’ zone and the Essequibo ‘Blackberry’ zone and the Organisers, the Guyana Cricket Board, says that several Digicel promotions will be held at the various venues before a Digicel Rest team take on the National 20/20 side which will participate in the Regional 20/20 tournament scheduled to commence in Barbados on July 22.
The Guyana team will be selected from performances in the Digicel Summer Smash and will play three matches against the Digicel team, comprising the best players who failed to make the national side.
The GCB is looking to have a ‘high-standard’ competition and since the quality of play in Essequibo is the weakest of the three counties, a West Demerara combined team will play as one of the three teams in the Essequibo zone.
The Demerara zone will begin with two matches at the Enmore ground on June 13 while the Essequibo zone gets going with two matches at the Anna Regina ground on June 12.
According to the GCB, the competition will be put on hold after the final Super Six match on June 27 for the DJ Stress 20/20 Cricket Festival at the Guyana National Stadium on July 4 since this competition is sanctioned by the GCB.
The action in the Digicel Summer Smash resumes on July 9 with the two semi-finals at the Stadium before the grand finale the next day at the same venue when three matches will be held.
A 10/10 exhibition game involving the Guyana female team will be followed by the 3rd place play-off before the final is played.
Super Six matches will be played at the Rose Hall Canje ground, Anna Regina in Region 2 and Bourda. Albion, Wakenaam and Uitvlugt will also host matches in the competition which is expected to involve all of the country’s top players.
It was disclosed that West Indies players Shiv Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine and Travis Dowlin along with Ramnaresh Sarwan (if fit) could be only available from the semi-final stage due to expected West Indies duties. (Sean Devers)
