As the boxers elected to represent Guyana at the Central American and Caribbean Games scheduled for Puerto Rico starting on July 22 next, the Hand in Hand Insurance Company made a healthy donation to the officials of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) to help offset the costs of participation.
Yesterday afternoon, in the boardroom of the Hand in Hand Insurance, Avenue of the Republic offices, Fire Manager and Director of the Hand in Hand, Howard Cox joined Human Resources Manager, Ms Zaida Joaquin and Marketing Coordinator, Ms Andrea Jodhan to hand over a cheque to offset the traveling and other expenses of one boxer to be identified by GABA officials.
Moments after the cheque exchanged hands Mr. Cox pointed out that his organization has always supported local athletes in their drive to procure international accolades. He said that local boxers have always demonstrated the ability to perform internationally and his company felt compelled to support their dreams.
He further noted that winning medals at the CAC Games would require the local boxers to lift their game at least two notches.
“The level of competition would be high especially with participation of the Latin American boxers. Our boys would have to train diligently and we are happy to contribute to this process,” said Mr. Cox.
Meanwhile, President of the GABA, Steve Ninvalle accepted the gift and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Cox. He also singled out the efforts of Vice president of the GABA, Maurice Rajkumar who had worked tirelessly to procure the donation.
Mr. Ninvalle intimated that the cost of taking one boxer to the games is approximately $US2000. He said that officials of the GOA have agreed to offset half of the amount necessary for the trip. “Since GABA is cash strapped we are forced to seek the intervention of the corporate community to make the trip a possibility,” Mr. Ninvalle said while pleading for support.
Six boxers have been identified for possible participation in the Puerto Rico CAC Games scheduled to commence on July 22 next.
Two coaches, Sebert Blake and Terrence Poole have been selected to accompany the team while Mr. Rajkumar would travel in the capacity as Manager.
Mr. Poole said that GABA officials are currently awaiting a reply from a correspondence dispatched to the Commander of the GDF, Gary Best, seeking to have the boxers encamped at the Camp Ayangana barracks.
The boxers identified for training are: flyweight, Dexter Jordon, lightweight, Clevon Rock, featherweight Ray Sandiford and junior/lightweight Bert Braithwaite.
