– Hamid laments need for indoor facility
By Edison Jefford
President of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA), Abdulla Hamid expressed the association’s frustration over the frequent postponements of events, which was attributed to what he called “unpredictable weather” in the Mining Town.
Hamid was speaking to Kaieteur Sport Sunday afternoon following the postponement of the final of their League Saturday night. He said the association was forced to postpone the event after the sudden burst of rain left the Mackenzie court unplayable.
This writer had travelled to Linden Saturday night for the LABA League Final, but the court was abandoned with the weather looking fairly well. When reached, Hamid submitted to an interview the following day, in which he explained the LABA’s dilemma.
“We had started to set up for the game around 7:15 Saturday night when rain suddenly burst and left us with no other decision than to postpone the finals. You know we really couldn’t have done anything about that, we don’t control the weather,” Hamid said.
It was the first suspension of the final though the semi-final had undergone three weather-related adjournments before it was finally played last week. The LABA President stated that he will not expose any player under the aegis of the association to injury.
“I will not allow the player to play on wet concrete. If they get injured then you will hear that it’s my responsibility because I allowed the games to play on wet concrete. I will never allow that to happen in Linden under my Presidency,” Hamid keenly indicated.
He stated that with the advent of the rainy season in Guyana, indoor venues become increasingly necessary in major towns such as Linden. The LABA head was of the view that weather, being an outdoor phenomenon, would not affect an indoor programme.
“I have been saying it for years. Linden is a strong basketball playing community and up to now, we can’t get an indoor venue. Even if we don’t get the full enclosed thing, we can get the shed as the one at the premier court in Antigua,” Hamid believes.
He added that with the setback of them not procuring adequate sponsorship, the final would have provided an important opportunity for the Linden sub-association to raise funds. Hamid believes that support for the event could be shady with the trend of frequent postponements.
