Five (5) outstanding Retired Educators with combined teaching experience of 160 years were honoured on Friday last by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) under the annual Fogarty’s/Farouk Kudrath Memorial Tribute to Retired Teachers’ Programme which is in its 2nd year.
The Programme was held at the Club’s Area ‘H’ Ground Head office and was organised by the Club’s Pepsi Under-19 and Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 teams as part of their self development programme for 2010.
The awardees were Marva Baird (Berbice High School -Retired Headmistress), Desiree Benjamin-Lewis (Rose Hall Town Nursery School – Retired Headmistress), Mayleen Welch (Ankerville Nursery School – Retired Headmistress), Nandranie Bachan (Manchester Nursery School – Retired Headmistress) and Rajpaul Bhim (Skeldon High School – Retired Deputy Headmaster).
RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster hailed the five awardees as silent heroes of Guyana who worked beyond the call of duty to assist thousands of youths to have a solid foundation educationally.
Foster thanked the retirees for their service over the years and told them that Guyana is a far better country because of their dedication and hard work.
The long serving Sports Administrator urged the retirees to continue serving the youths of Berbice and to focus on teaching them the importance of education and sports in their lives; most importantly to be positive role models to every person they interact with.
Foster disclosed that the awardees were nominated by members of the club based on years of service, role model status, personal discipline, involvement in sports and the positive impact they’ve made on the lives of the students.
Senior Master of the Lower Corentyne Secondary School Mr. Imran Ally delivered the feature address and described the awardees as teachers who set high standards for others to emulate.
Ally, who was honoured by the club last month as a Teacher of the Year, spoke at length on the qualities that makes a successful teacher; he challenged the five awardees to share their experiences with young teachers.
Vice Captain of the Under-19 team Lloydel Lewis congratulated the awardees and told them that he and his teammates were proud to honour them.
Each awardee expressed gratitude to the Club. Mrs. Nandranie Bachan stated that after teaching for 31 years and guiding thousands of students it was a wonderful feeling to be recognised for services that were given out of love.
She noted that the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union have not honoured her to date while hailing the club for paying tribute to her and her colleagues.
Mrs. Bachan also pledged that the awardees will continue to work with students to assist them to develop.
The awardees each received a collection of gifts and a Farouk Kudrath’s Memorial Certificate of Excellence.
The late Farouk Kudrath was the Asst. Secretary of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for 13-years before his sudden demise in July, 2008 at the age of forty. He was responsible for the club’s anti-drugs and pro-education campaign and was the chief architect of the club’s highly successful drive to get youths to stay in school and say “Yes to Education and No to Drugs”.
The Management of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club would like to express gratitude to Fogarty’s for its sponsorship of the programme as well as Mr. Avinash Bhagwandin and Mr. Dutchin, both of Fogarty’s.
