Controversy still surrounds the death of Evelyn Daniels, 63, who was found with her throat slashed on Monday at the Amerindian Hostel, on Princes Street. Earlier reports coming out from the Hostel suggested that the woman committed suicide.
However, two medical practitioners who spoke with Kaieteur News are not convinced that the woman committed suicide.
The doctors who requested anonymity said that slashing one’s throat is not a conventional method of committing suicide.
The doctors said that slashing one’s throat in a suicide bid would be very painful and almost impossible.
The doctors also suggested that if the woman had stabbed herself, it might have been accepted but not slashing her throat.
“We are not convinced that she killed herself….there’s more to it”.
The two practitioners further suggested that there are many complications with this particular theory that Daniels killed herself.
They said that one has to look at the direction of the wound. They explained that the beginning of the wound would be “light’ but coming to middle and end, it would have to be deeply penetrated to cause death. “You have to penetrate the jugular vein to cause death,” said one of the doctors.
In addition, one must take into consideration the woman’s age and the amount of strength she could possess to deeply penetrate the knife into her neck.
The doctors also explained that statistics would show that “consuming poison or hanging” is very common and not slashing one’s throat.
On Monday last, eyewitnesses disclosed that the woman was fetched out in a chair with her throat slashed.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman was supposed to have travelled to Matthews Ridge on Wednesday.
Sources within the Hostel told Kaieteur News that the woman was seen minutes earlier in the administrator’s office.
The police in a press statement had said that another resident had seen Daniels cutting her throat and raised an alarm.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs has issued a statement strongly condemning the initial Kaieteur News story. The press release suggested that this publication was speculative in its reports.
“This Daily has become like a poisonous arrow over the years and by its actions has exposed itself as the new opposition” the press release stated.
In a statement, the Ministry disclosed that it is alleged that on May 31, 2010, the now deceased Daniels was found inflicting fatal wounds to herself at the Amerindian Hostel and the staff immediately rushed the patient to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The Ministry stated that they promptly responded to the emergency call of the Administrator of the facility by dispatching a team consisting of the Permanent Secretary and two Project Officers. Internal findings by the team indicated suicide.
However, the Ministry’s statement differs from what the Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall had told this newspaper.
When contacted, Dharamlall denied that the Ministry had sent officials to investigate the matter, and in fact stated that the matter was one for the police to handle and not the Ministry.
