Dear Editor,
Last Wednesday (02-06-10) afternoon I was walking across my village of Mocha-Arcadia when I observed that the six-inch water-main at the Burnham Boulevard ‘four-corner’ was gushing water into the air and into the four-foot drain.
Yesterday (03-06-10) afternoon when I happened to pass that route again I was surprised to see that the breakage was not yet fixed. I should have known since the water pressure by me was still reduced.
This morning (Thursday 04-06-10) on reporting the breakage to GWI at Peter’s Hall, EBD, I was informed that no earlier report was received.
What is surprising and disturbing is that none of the nearby residents could have seen it in their interest and as their responsibility to make the necessary report. Blame could also be attached to councilors of the NDC, who could have even instructed the overseer to inform GWI.
In this day and age when every Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane has a cell-phone, no one had the thoughtfulness of calling GWI.
I also wonder whether some persons with cell-phones did not know how to use a Telephone Directory to obtain the telephone number of GWI.
Incidentally, the broken pipe and the fact that the well operates 11 hours per day mean that the pipe which runs across the four-foot drain is sometimes submerged in the drain. Therefore, in the ‘off-period’ impurities can seep into the line.
These impurities can come from urine from persons urinating along the parapet and from animal droppings from those animals which roam the village. Hence, it was necessary to fix the breakage with the minimum delay so as to reduce health hazard.
I trust that those who read this letter in Mocha-Arcadia and elsewhere will realise that civic responsibility includes taking action in matters like reporting breakage of water lines and sparking electrical wires.
