Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of 38-year-old Ron Mercurius called Mark, of Adelaide Street, Charlestown.
Mercurius, an employee of Banks DIH, was found dead in front of St Stephen’s Church in Princes Street, Charlestown, at around 07:00 hours yesterday.
There are reports that he fell from the top stairs of a three- storey building.
When found, the body was only clad with a pair of dark blue jeans. Police conducted preliminary investigations at the scene before the body was taken away by the Lyken/Newburg Funeral Parlour, as curious onlookers converged.
According to the man’s reputed wife, Oneika Simon, she received the message from her aunt that Mercurius was found dead in Princes Street.
She hurried to the scene, where the confirmation was almost too much to bear.
“I tell he don’t drink and must stop drink… he don’t hear!” Simon said.
She disclosed that she has a son for Mercurius, but she and the man had separated.
Simons added that she last saw Mercurius on Tuesday afternoon, and he told her that he would return, however, he never did.
A female resident recalled that, “on Wednesday night at around nine o’clock, he been at a three-storey house on Sussex and Adelaide Street whey he buy something, and he fall till from de top to de bottom and he head de buss. He get a hard knock!”
She explained that the man was drunk when he fell down the stairs, and assistance was offered to him. She said he was placed in a corner, “so he could of catch he self.”
The woman said after 11:00 pm the same night she passed him on the street lying down on the concrete.
“I ask a friend if is the same man Mark that fall down the step. I turn and tell she he got to go at the hospital but he family got to follow he.”
From all appearances, Mercurius was left on the roadway without any medical attention and succumbed to his injuries.
